Caring for Your Dubarry Boots

I bought my Dubarry boots almost 5 years ago. Even though I was working at Farlows and knew all about the care products available to go with the boots I still thought I could get away without having to use them.

Unfortunately I was wrong! My Dubarry's have been everywhere with me. I wear them shooting, for dog walks, during the fairs Farlows attends, and I even take them to Europe when I go on city breaks or skiing.

Amazingly the boots are still completely waterproof, but look at the leather….. oh dear!

Below is a list of products that will keep your Dubarry boots in the best possible condition however much you use them. You might think that you already have creams at home for leather, but don’t make the mistake of using them as they are probably not suitable for Gore-Tex.

Gel Cleaner – it is good practice to clean your boots with the gel cleaner to remove dirt and avoid residue. This dirt and residue will block the pores in the leather which will affect the breathability of the inner Gore-Tex lining. If your boots have been worn around yard manure and waste liquids they must be cleaned immediately after use as these are very corrosive to the leather.

Conditioner – the full grain leather (smooth leather) on your boots will need to be fed to keep it supple and to stop it from drying out and cracking. The great thing about this conditioner is that it does not stop the breathability of the Gore-Tex. I would advise you not to use the conditioner on the crushed leather as it will darken it and make it go shiny.

Protector – This is great to protect your boots from oil and stains.

Leather Cream – this is what my boots need. If you have been a bit neglectful with your boots and they are looking a bit sorry for themselves this cream helps to preserve the leather.

Boot Trees – you can see from the photo of my boots that the ankle area has creased down. This is because I started off standing my boots upright when I wasn’t wearing them. You have two options to avoid the creased look. You can either store your boots lying flat or, if you’re short of space, boot trees are perfect to hold the boots in place

Boot Jacks – Try not to damage the backs of your boots by using a step to remove them. The step will scratch away at the leather on the ankles and make it looks very scruffy

Only one more bit of important advice for your boots – If they need drying as you have rinsed them or been out in the rain DO NOT dry them near an open fire or artificial heat like a radiator. This will only dry out the leather.

We have customers  who have had their boots for over 12 years, so they really do last as long as you give them a bit of love and care every once in a while!
