Smashing Clays with the London Shooting Club

It’s funny how people are more likely to take lessons when they embark on certain sports and pastimes. Golf and tennis are probably at the top of the list of lesson sports. Fishing and shooting are good examples of sports that are often learnt from well-meaning relatives and friends. From my time as a fly fishing instructor I know this is often not the best route to success. Lessons will take away a lot of frustration and move you on quickly in the sport. Shooting also involves a very dangerous weapon, you must be taught the rules for gun safety from the very beginning. So lessons are a must.

Gun Safety A quick re-cap on gun safety.

I have owned shotguns for over 30 years and in that time have done a reasonable amount of clay shooting, game shooting and vermin shooting. I am a fisher by nature, whereas guns have only ever been a secondary interest. However that’s not to say I don’t enjoy shooting but I admit it’s been probably 30 years since I had a lesson. This all changed the other day when I went see the London Shooting Club’s APSI qualified Sporting Director Steve Jones at a shooting ground in West London.

Steve is the perfect coach – calm, encouraging and supremely knowledgeable. We started off with discussion about my previous experience and I explained that although I can smash a clay or two, my performance is anything but consistent. The next step was to see how I faired on some easy targets... I hit most of these without too much fuss (Steve’s magic was already working).

We then upped the game and moved on to compak sporting layout – this gives the chance to shoot a variety of targets from different angles. My results were not so good here. The great thing was Steve’s experienced eye could see where I was going wrong and I was able to hit even the toughest targets with his advice and encouragement with some consistency.

So thanks Steve – I really enjoyed my lesson and came away with a renewed confidence. I can’t wait to get out shooting again soon and see what a difference the lesson has made. I cannot recommend Steve’s coaching highly enough and will certainly take some further lessons in the future. I wholeheartedly recommend you do the same.
